Post Procedure Skincare: Your Recovery Guide

Just had microneedling, laser or a peel? Your skin has done the hard part. Good post procedure skincare is simple: cleanse gently, keep your skin hydrated, protect it from the sun, and pause strong actives for a week or two while it settles.

What Your Skin Needs After a Treatment

For the first few days after a treatment, your skin is more sensitive than usual and loses moisture faster. That is why the best post procedure skincare routine is a short one. Cleanse with lukewarm water or a mild cleanser, apply a hydrating serum and a comforting cream, and keep your face out of the sun.

Strong products like retinol, exfoliating acids and vitamin C can wait. Most providers suggest pausing them for one to two weeks, then bringing them back one at a time. Your provider's aftercare advice always comes first, so use this guide alongside it. If something feels wrong, such as rising pain, swelling or blistering, call your clinic.

How Long Recovery Takes

After a light treatment, most skin feels warm and tight on day one, a little dry by day three, and may flake gently between days four and seven. By the second week it usually feels close to normal, and you can start reintroducing your regular products. Deeper laser, peels and RF microneedling can take two to three weeks, so give your skin the time it asks for.

Good skincare after a cosmetic treatment is mostly about patience. Keep the routine the same every day, change one thing at a time, and your skin will tell you when it is ready for more.

Microneedling, laser and peels each leave your skin needing something slightly different, so your aftercare should change too. Pick your treatment below for a clear day by day routine, the products worth keeping close, and the ones to put away for now.

Post Procedure Skincare FAQs

What is post procedure skincare?

It is the simple routine you follow at home after an in-clinic treatment. The focus is on gentle cleansing, hydration and sun protection while your skin settles, usually for one to two weeks.

When can I wear makeup again?

Wait at least 24 hours after microneedling, and around 48 hours after laser or a peel. Start with clean brushes and a light mineral formula.

Is peeling normal after a treatment?

Yes, light peeling is a normal part of recovery after peels and many laser treatments. Keep your skin moisturized and let the flakes come away on their own.

Do I need sunscreen after a procedure?

Yes. Treated skin is more sensitive to the sun. Stay in the shade for the first few days, then wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every morning and reapply every two hours outdoors. A mineral formula is usually the gentlest choice for healing skin.

When can I use retinol again?

Most providers suggest waiting one to two weeks. Start with two evenings a week and build up slowly. If your skin stings, give it a few more days.

How soon can I wash my face?

Usually after six to twelve hours. Use lukewarm water or a mild cleanser, your fingertips only, and pat dry with a clean towel.
